Fall Colors in the Ozarks, October

When will the FALL COLORS IN THE OZARKS START?

THIS JUST IN....THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INDICATES THAT STARTING WHEN

THE NIGHT TIME TEMPS WILL DROP BELOW 50 THAT SHOULD TRIGGER THE COLOR CHANGES!

We invite you to come and enjoy the Splendor of the Fall Colors in the Beautiful Ozarks

Probably the first question you may have is…WHEN should I come? It’s not an exact science but the general rule of thumb is...

THE MOON PHASES AND THE TEMPS AT NIGHT

New MOON is early this year but if the temps do not drop it could start later USUALLY

**OCTOBER 14TH to and thru the New MOON ON NOVEMBER 13TH 2023

PEAK FALL COLORS HIT WHEN THE NIGHT TIME TEMPS DROPS TO BELOW 50 DEGREES THIS IS GREAT NEWS FOR

YOU TO MAKE PLANS.

Days should hover in the mid 60's and nights in the 30’s and 40’s but not drop below freezing. The Ozark region has been blessed with much needed rain this summer and that fact may increase the color quality.  But temperature is the key to the trees cycle. Lower temps send a message to the tree to stop producing chlorophyll  (what we see as green) to prepare itself for winter. The Northern States with its flat farmland the colors change more quickly and don’t last quite as long.  The Ozarks are quite a different story. We in Baxter and Marion Counties are located in one of the oldest mountain ranges found in the US, The Ozark Mountains.

We have deep cool valleys along the majestic White and Buffalo Rivers winding between the hillsides.  Remember, cooler temperatures trigger the color change process. Changes begin in the valley at the lowest point, with the colors slowly working their way up to the warmer sun kissed hillsides.  It’s a beautiful site from the rivers or valley to see a rainbow of gold, reds and at the upper most point still summer green. For all the arborists in the crowd…we have Hickory, Maples, Hackberry, Gum Trees, White Oak, Red Oaks…in fact tons of  species of Oaks, Beech, Mimosa, Ash, Dogwoods, Red Buds, Walnut to name a few.   Each species has a unique internal clock offering change but we also have fir trees that spice up the color palette with Cedars, Pines, Spruces, and Hemlocks giving a deep green to our hills and valleys all year long.

"Cherished childhood memories of fall. A return to school, new classroom, shoes, books and teachers. Excited talks of what we kids did all summer long. Warm breezes on the walk home with the sun peaking and sparkling thru the green, gold and red canopy of the tree tops. A sudden gust of hundreds of leaves blown in whirlwinds…dancing across our path. Run, chase and jump into an inviting pile of soft leaves followed by uncontrollable giggles. The air is kissed by the sweet aroma of spent leaves, set to smolder by a friendly neighbor leaning on his rake."

We sincerely hope you will want to visit with us for the Fall Colors! Don’t forget your camera or paints and easel but most of all, let us know you are accepting our invitation!
